Make timelapse animations with your webcam for free

If you ever wanted to make your own time lapse animations but found it hard to start, or just didn’t have the right software, you now have a great alternative.

Recently WeGIF.com introduced a new feature called the self timer which is part of it’s free online animation creator tool. Basically it works like the timer on some digital photo cameras or separate remote timer controllers for SLR cameras. You set the number of frames to take and the interval between frames, hit the start timer button and off it goes.

It is extremely easy to make time-lapses of your window view, family or pets moving around, sun shadows, flowers moving etc. Check out the post over at WeGIF.com for some cool animations and more details: http://blog.wegif.com/2009/04/01/making-time-lapse-animations-online-with-wegif/

This is more stop-motion than time-lapse but you get the point.

WeGIF Pro accounts expand creative options

WeGIF just released Pro paid subscription accounts last night for those who want to get the most out of the WeGIF experience. The biggest change in my opinion is the ability to use the online tool to create animations of up to 90 frames. This is 9x the amount you used to be limited to with a free account and I can’t wait to see what people will do with all those frames.

I would love to try out mini movies; think 9 scenes with 10 frames each, that’s enough to make a comic or tell a story. It would be great for people to publish episodic content.

Another benefit is being able to publish a lot more wegifs in a 30 day period. Pro users can publish up to 500 wegifs, compared to 20 for free accounts. Pro users can also upload large finished animated gif files (up to 8mb file size) and have those converted to wegifs automatically. As of now, the upload of animated gif files does not have a frame limit, so I expect this feature to be interesting to more experienced users who know how to make animated gif files using their own software.

Pro account also come with a promise to get access to new features sooner, potentially while still in development. So for example, when WeGIF adds albums, this will probably go to Pro users first and eventually trickle down to everyone.

Big changes; can’t wait to see what happens next.

Mini Augmented Reality 2

I decided to record the webcam video output from the Mini Augmented Reality marketing campaign and make some wegifs out of it.

This is not a toy model, it’s a 3d object being aligned to the magazine cover, composited complete with shadows and all rendered in real time.
